WIP Crochet Mermaid Barbie

If you have been following me here on my blog, or through my facebook page, you will know that I am slowly working my way through crocheting barbie outfits inspired by disney heroines.  I have finished using Tinkerbell for inspiration, and now I am working on a mermaid that is inspired by Ariel from "The Little Mermaid".

Some fun trivia before we get into this project... The Disney movie of "The Little Mermaid" came out in the same month and year that I was born.  Also, this is one of my most favourite Disney Heroines!

For this project, I have been using the crocodile stitch.  There is a great video tutorial by The Crochet Crowd on YouTube for this stitch for any of you that would like to learn it.  It is extremely easy stitch to learn and crochet once you get the hang of it!

To the left, you will see the first rnd completed after I attached the two sides together.  Below, you will see a few more rounds completed but on its side this time.

So far, crocheting the tail has been working up quickly, and easily.  Unfortunately, I have run out of the green for the tail as you will see in the picture below...

I have been searching hi and low for this green, in actuality, any green!  However, all of the yarn suppliers nearby have been low in stock for the past while.  I would hate to crochet the bottom part of the tail if I can't find this exact shade of green, so she is on hold for the present.

You will also see in this picture to the bottom left, that I was testing out what it would look like if I closed the tail up with a contrasting green.

Though I am thinking I would rather close the tail up with the same green used for the base.

I am still figuring out how I want to crochet the tail flipper extension things.  I want them to be dramatic!  So we will have to wait to see what I am able to come up with on that score.

Along with keeping you and my facebook fans updated on my mermaid's progress, I have been getting input from my youngest sister, Boo Bear.  As you can imagine, her creative mind went nuts when I told her what I was planning to crochet.  Some of her ideas for how I should accessorize her include, but is not limited to, crocheting Flounder, Sebastian, a pipe, a fork, more outfits, a comb for her hair, Eric, and a Steed.  

Isn't she too cute!  While I love her all of her ideas, I am thinking that Eric and his trusty Steed should be for another project, when I get a new Ken.
