Are you and your friends suckers for hearts? Crochet this fun Sweetheart Kisses Coaster for your heart collection. It's perfect for heart lovers and Valentine's Day gifts!
This pattern includes instructions for crocheting a 4½” (11 cm) square using the sweetheart kisses stitch I personally designed in 2015.
This is the second design I created using this sweet precious stitch, and is also the second one I am sharing with you this month.
You can make it in 2 or more colours to get different looks. Have fun and play with it!

Sweetheart Kisses Stitch:
The Sweetheart Kisses is a crochet stitch I personally designed. For video and photo tutorials of this stitch, please click here. Each time you see the abbreviation “sweetheart”, you will be making one heart.
TIP for switching colours = When only 2 loops rem on the hook to complete the stitch, drop the current colour and use the next colour to yarn over and pull through the loops to complete the stitch. Proceed as normal.
sweetheart = switch to heart colour as you complete the last st before the sweetheart stitch is made – sk 2 sts, dc in the next st, tr in the st from the prev row below the last dc made (tr drop st), (dc, sc, dc) in the same sp as the last dc made, tr in the same sp as the last tr made (tr drop st), dc in the same sp as the last dc made – switch to background colour as you finish this last dc of the sweetheart kiss stitch, sk 2 sts (7 sts = 1 heart).
This coaster is worked in rows. You have the option of starting with a FSC row (recommended for it’s stretchiness, click here for a tutorial by Moogly) or starting with the traditional foundation chs. *ODD rows = RS.
OPTION 1 – Recommended:
row 1: FSC 42 in red or chosen background colour, ch 1, turn (42 sts).
OPTION 2 – Traditional:
ch 43 in red or chosen background colour...
row 1: work this row in the bottom loop (a.k.a. back hump) of the chs – sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each across, ch 1, turn (42 sts).
Continuing the Pattern for BOTH Options:
row 2: sc 42, ch 1, turn (42 sts).
row 3: sc, [sweetheart, sc 2] x 5, sweetheart, sc, ch 1, turn (54 sts).
row 4: carry the heart thread under the sts as you work this row – sc, [*dc into each of the next 2 unworked sts from the prev row, insert your hook into 2 lps of a post st from the top-center-back of the heart – work a sl st here (remember that the WS is facing you right now, so you’ll work into the side facing you), dc into each of the next 2 unworked sts from the prev row,** sc into each of the 2 sc sts between the hearts] x 5, rep from * to **, sc, ch 1, turn (42 sts). *Make sure not to accidentally grab or work around the heart sts.
From here, only carry the heart thread up the rows until you need it again...
row 5-6: sc 42, ch 1, turn (42 sts).
row 7-42: rep rows 3-6 alternately until you have a total of 10 heart rows, f/o at the end of the last row.
Weave in all ends. Block according to your preference, or not at all.
