Liven up your Christmas trees this year with this fabulous Striped Bobble Bauble, which uses a combination of amigurumi, colourwork and a variation of the bobble stitch to create a beautifully textured Christmas ornament!
Christmas is the latest theme for a magazine, where I have been contributing patterns.
Christmas is always a fun theme to design for and I had several ideas. I was also aching to crochet with the DK cotton yarn my Bestemor (Norwegian for Grandma) sent me in March. At first I was going to see if I could design a tapestry crochet bauble, but then I thought how much fun it would be to add some texture to the ornament, so I decided to use a variation of the bobble stitch. I wanted to create a fancy design in the bauble, but I thought it would be easier if I first did a simple one, where I only switched colours once per round. The end result created a beautiful striped bauble that has the illusion of spirals when one looks at it from the bottom.
I crocheted this bauble in Sandnes Garn Mandarin Naturell, which is a cotton DK (3 : Light / 8 ply UK) yarn from Norway. I used the colourways 4627 Cerice and 6937 Green.
When crocheted with DK yarn and paired with a 3.75mm hook, this warm sunshine is about 4.25” (10.8cm) tall, but it can be made bigger or smaller, simply by adjusting the yarn and hook size.
A huge thank you to my testers, April (Good Hooking Creations), Lindsay, Margie, Sandy and Valerie for crocheting these pretty striped bobble baubles. And thanks to my lovely tech editor, Theresa too!
