You'll Need:

  • yarn/thread (your choice) about 50m (7.5 grams / less than 1 oz) - in two colours
  • hook to obtain gauge
  • tapestry yarn needle
  • stitch markers *optional

Techniques Used:

  • crocheting in the round
  • magic circle
  • tapestry crochet (visit this blog post for how-to and resource links)

Abbreviations: USA Terminology Used

ch - chain
sc - single crochet
st - stitch
sl st - slip stitch
ch sp(s) - chain space(s)
BL - back loop
A - colour A
B - colour B
rep - repeat
f/o - fasten off

Gauge:

In sc and carrying 1 colour under your stitches, you should be able to make a “perfect” square that has the same number of rows and stitches per row (e.g. 10 stitches per row, 10 rows = a square).

Sizes:  These measurements are just a guideline. Your FO may be a different size depending on various factors.

  • The one pictured is made using Cotton Thread #10 and a 1.90mm Hook. It makes a backpack for a 4-6” tall doll like Kelly & Chelsea by Mattel, and it measures 1.6” (4 cm) Tall,  with a 3” (7.5 cm) Circumference.
  • 2ply-Lace (0:Lace) Yarn and a 3.00mm Hook makes a backpack for a 7”-8” tall doll like Stacy & Skipper by Mattel, and it measures approximately 2.5” (6.35 cm) Tall,  with a 4.25” (10.8 cm) Circumference.
  • 3ply-Light Fingering (0:Lace) Yarn and a 3.50mm Hook makes a backpack for a 11.5” tall doll like Barbie by Mattel, and it measures approximately 3” (7.6 cm) Tall,  with a 5” (12.7 cm) Circumference.
  • 4ply-Fingering (1:Super Fine) Yarn and a 3.75mm Hook makes a small coin purse or a big fashion doll backpack, and it measures approximately 3.5” (8.9 cm) Tall,  with a 5.25” (13.33 cm) Circumference.
  • 5ply-Sport (2: Fine) Yarn and a 3.75mm Hook makes a small coin purse or a big fashion doll backpack, and it measures approximately 3.5” (8.9 cm) Tall,  with a 5.5” (14 cm) Circumference.
  • 8ply-DK (3:Light) Yarn and a 4.00mm Hook makes a small coin purse or a jumbo fashion doll backpack, and it measures approximately 3.5” (9 cm) Tall,  with a 6.25” (16 cm) Circumference.
  • 10ply-Worsted (4:Medium) Yarn and a 5.00mm Hook makes a great coin purse, and it measures approximately 4” (10 cm) Tall,  with a 6.5” (16.5 cm) Circumference. When rows 13-16 are eliminated, it will be about 2.5” (6.35 cm) Tall instead.

Pattern Notes:

  • Work in continuous rounds, unless directed to do otherwise.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of a round to keep track of rows.
  • This bag is worked from bottom up.
  • You may like to eliminate rows 13-16 for a shorter bag, particularly if you are making a coin purse.
  • Due to the nature of crocheting in the round with colour changes, the beginning and ending sts of rows will not always line up, so the first zig zag line will start off looking like a diamond.
  • If you are new to tapestry crochet, you’ll want to be careful to crochet with a tight yet relaxed tension.
  • You will not always start a new row with the same colour that you ended a previous row with, so make sure read ahead before completing the last st of each row.
  • The graph is on a slant because crocheting in the round causes the sts to lean more to one side.

Bag Instructions:

starting base of bag...
rnd 1: sc 6 (A) into a magic circle  (6 sts)
rnd 2: start carrying B, sc 2 in next st x 6 (A)  (12 sts)
rnd 3: [sc 3 in next st, sc 4, sc 3 in next st] x 2 (A)  (20 sts)
rnd 4: [sc, sc 3 in next st, sc 6, sc 3 in next st, sc] x 2 (A)  (28 sts)
starting to work upwards, from here you can use the graph as a secondary guide...
rnd 5: sc 28 in BL (A)
rnd 6: [sc 2 (A), sc 2 (B), sc 2 (A), sc 1 (B)] x 4
rnd 7: [sc 2 (A), {sc 1 (B), sc 1 (A),} x 2, sc 1 (B)] x 4
rnd 8: [sc 1 (B), sc 2 (A), sc 2 (B), sc 2 (A)] x 4
rnd 9: [sc 1 (B), sc 6 (A)] x 4

rnd 14: rep row 12
rnd 15: [sc 1 (A), sc 1 (B), sc 2 (A), sc 1 (B), sc 1 (A), sc 1 (B)] x 4
rnd 16: [sc 2 (A), sc 1 (B), sc 2 (A), sc 2 (B)] x 4
rnd 17: sc 28 (A)
rnd 18: [{sc, ch 3, sc (B), sc, ch 3, sc (A)} x 2, {sc, ch 3, sc (B)} x 2, sc, ch 3, sc (A)] x 2, sl st join to 1st st of rnd, ch 1, f/o. *Alternatively, you may do this row all in 1 colour - [sc, ch 3, sc] x 14.
Flower Bug Graph

For the Strap or Ties (if making a Coin Purse instead):

  • ch 37, or as many chains as it takes to get to the desired length of at least 2 times Height + Circumference of the bag, or as long as you would prefer it to be.  Fasten off with tails. *Alternatively, you can make braids for the straps, or use any other method you prefer.
  • Starting from the center on one side of the bag, weave the 1st strap through ch sps all the way around.  *The 1st & 4th A ch sps (a.k.a. 2nd & 9th ch sps) equal the bag’s center sides for the backpack.  **If making the a coin purse, you may wish to use the front (5th & 6th ch sps) and back (12th & 13th ch sps) centers of the bag instead.
  • Use the tails of the strap to tie both ends to the center bottom stitch of that side of the bag (if making a coin purse, omit this step, and just tie the ends together in any way you like).
  • Repeat with 2nd strap but start from opposite side.

Weave in all ends.
