Crochet Barbie Mermaid

Now that the hustle and bustle of last year is over, I was finally able to finish the WIP Crochet Mermaid Barbie I started back in August.  It is inspired by Ariel from the Little Mermaid.

When I finished it the other day, I couldn't believe it was finished.  I thought that perhaps it was missing something.  Then, I reminded myself that simplicity is sometimes the best option.  

I am ever so pleased with how she has turned out!  However, before I turn her into a pattern, I plan to make another, but add sequence or beads to the tail.

Barbie Mermaid's Tail

The tail is by far the most important piece for this set as it is what makes her a mermaid.  So, I started with it first.   It is worked from bottom up using the crocodile stitch (links the video tutorial I used to learn this stitch).  Then, I finished it off with a shell stitch (links to a great video tutorial for beginners).  After the base of the tail was finished, I crochet the fins directly onto the tail using a sort of shell stitch.

Barbie Mermaid's Socks

The crocodile stitch leaves lots of little holes that barbie's feet can easily slip out of.  So, I crocheted a sock to keep her feet together and snug.  It was the last piece of the set to be crocheted.

Barbie Mermaid's Tops

The top to the left (See Top A) was crocheted first.  I was meaning for it to be like the one to the right, but inspiration lead me to that design instead.  Afterwards, I crocheted the one on the right (See Top B), so she could have the same top as Ariel.  Though, I really like the first one the best!

Do you think I should design a few more different styles of tops to go with the set, or do you think it is fine with just these two?

Barbie Mermaid's Sea Star Headband

After the tops were made, I got to thinking about a sea star that she could wear.  So, I made the star with a band so that it could be fastened into her hair.

By pulling aside a small portion of hair around the front, I was able to hide the headband bit.  

I just pulled some of the hair in front aside.  Then, I gathered the rest of the hair in the back and inserted it into the headband.  Afterwards, I positioned the star where I wanted it to be before placing the front hairs into position.

Barbie Mermaid's Bag

In the Little Mermaid, Ariel is always seen collecting all sorts of gadgets and gizmos, so it seemed only fitting to make this mermaid a similar bag too.  

It is worked amigurumi style in continuous rounds.

I hope you have enjoyed looking and reading about this set.  Pattern will be available later this month, or by February at the latest.  -  UPDATE:  Due to working on "Happily Ever After" for the last few months, this pattern has been postponed.  I hope to get back to work on this in May/June to have it ready by July at the latest.
