Amigurumi Animals

My Amigurumi Animal Collection September-October 2012
All of the projects above were worked with crochet cotton (3-10 size?) and 1.6mm hook (I think? It only says size 3, and I have a 1.7mm hook that also says size 3, but it is slightly larger than the one I used).  Except for the Bear, every bit was crochet, minus some embroidery of the eyes, some noses, and the mouth's.  Most of the little ones took about 1 full day to complete.  The big ones and the rest of the little ones took about 2-3 days to complete.

I really like amigurumi, and I wanted to make some mini animals!  So I went searching for patterns for inspiration in September, and I came across Sharon Ojala's Little Bigfoot Collection.  I thought they were so cute!

Amigurumi Elephant

I immediately started working on Gracie the Tiny Elephant because she was tiny!  I didn't have the same hook size, so I used one that was slightly bigger.  So she ended up being slightly bigger at 2.75" tall.  I also crocheted her a little dress and flower, and embroidered the eyes.  I then proceeded to show my mom via Skype!

Then, I made the Tiny Bear (not pictured), and added a loop on the head so that it could be attached to my fiance's work badge.  Take a look at the more recent Amigurumi Tiny Bear I made.

I wanted to make some more about the same size as the elephant and bear, so I took a look at the Little Bigfoot Elephant pattern and compared it to Gracie the Tiny Elephant pattern.  It was there that I noticed that the pattern was the same with the exception of the yarn and hook size.  I also noticed that all the animals in the Little Bigfoot collection looked like they shared similar features.  When I looked at the patterns, I found that they are all similar with there own small changes.  I thought "this is great, less to memorize"!  So, I opened numbers and grouped them to find out what all was similar.

Amigurumi Goblin Fairy

I crocheted the Goblin Fairy next.  I say goblin because she is green, and I wanted to make a fairy.  When I started these animals, the cream colour was tied up on another project.  However, I had been wanting to make a doll and put cool hair on her head.  So, I went ahead and made her mostly following the Little Bigfoot Baby pattern.  I added a crocheted nose and embroidered her eyes. I, then, had fun putting hair on her head, latch hook style without the latch hook.  Lastly, I crocheted some wings a top and a skirt right onto the doll.  She is 2.5" tall.

Amigurumi Giraffe

The Giraffe was crocheted next; mostly following the Little Bigfoot Giraffe pattern.  My youngest sister said that I should make some with blue or green eyes, so I made this one with blue eyes.  I crocheted 7 patches in total for the giraffe.  He is 3.5" tall.

Amigurumi Lion

The Lion came next.  I mostly followed the Little Bigfoot Lion pattern.  This time I used green eyes.  I deviated from the pattern when it came to the mane.  10 chains just overwhelmed my lion, so I varied them from 3-6 chains with the larger number of chains being on the top of the head and the smaller number of chains toward the bottom.  In this way, I was able to shape the mane to be more triangular at the bottom instead of round.  He is 2.5" tall.

Amigurumi Monkey

The Little Monkey was crocheted next.  I mostly followed the Little Bigfoot Monkey pattern for this one.  I did the eyes and mouth differently, and I added an inner ear (magic circle 6, sl st, f/o. Use tail of outer ear to sew the inner ear on).  She is 2.5" tall.

Amigurumi Kangaroo

I crocheted the Kangaroo next.  My mom gave me the idea of crocheting a kangaroo.  I used Sharon's basic pattern for the Little Bigfoot Collection as a base.  She is 3" tall.

See Amigurumi Kangaroo for the pattern on how I made it.

Amigurumi Bunny

The Bunny came next.  I mostly followed the Little Bigfoot Bunny pattern.  I made the ears completely differently from the pattern because they didn't turn out good when I made them.  That is probably due to the yarn type.  So I just made my own [Outer Ear - (ch 11.  R1: sc in back ridge for a total of 10 st.  Turn.  R2: sc 21 around to the other side.  Turn.  R3: sc 10, hdc, sc 10, f/o with long tail.).  Inner Ear - (Follow pattern for  outer ear until the end of R2 in opposite colour).  Use tail of outer ear to sew the inner ear onto it.]  She is 3" tall.

Here I took a little break making the smaller ones as we had been invited to a baby baptism that we were not sure if we were going to be able to attend.  At any rate, I wanted to make a gift to bring her just in case we could go.  I wasn't sure which animal I wanted to make her, but I did want to make it bigger.

Since the only worst-weight yarn I have access to is of extremely cheap quality and irritates my hands, I needed to make my own pattern to accommodate the crochet cotton yarn I was working with.

I wanted the same look as the Little Bigfoot Collection, so I changed the stitching to make that happen.

Amigurumi Monkey

Picture

I made the Larger Monkey first with my new pattern in hand.  She ended up being 5" tall like Sharon's Little Bigfoot Monkey.  She actually has little bells inside that make a faint rattling sound.  When she was finished, I just could not part with her.  I mean, she looks like the Little Monkey's Mommy!  It didn't seem right to separate mommy from baby monkey, and I had used up my pretty plum purple so there was no guarantee that I would be able to make another mommy monkey.

Amigurumi Bear

So I made the Bear with a pretty dress to gift instead.

She is also 5" tall like Sharon's Little Bigfoot Bear, but she was made with my own pattern.

After the bear, I took a little break from amigurumi animals to work on some other projects.  After I did those, I got back to work on more little ones...

Amigurumi Hippo

Picture
Picture
Hippo was the next one to be crocheted.  I mostly followed the Little Bigfoot Hippo pattern.  Instead of felt for the inner ears, I crocheted them (magic circle 5. ch 1, turn, 2 sc in each st for 10 st, f/o.  Use tail of the Hippo ear to sew the inner ear onto it.).  I embroidered her mouth differently than in the pattern.  She is 2.75" tall.

Amigurumi Turtle

The Turtle came next.  I mostly followed the Little Bigfoot Turtle pattern.  Instead of sc two rows around the turtle's shell, I did one row of sc.  Then, on the second row I did 1 sc, ch 1 and repeated that all around.  I, also made the chains that hold the front piece over tummy shorter at the top.  He is 2.5" tall.

Amigurumi Poodle

Picture

I crocheted the Poodle next.  I used Sharon's basic pattern for the Little Bigfoot Collection as a base.  At first, I had her nose/mouth as pink and she looked like a rodent.  By changing it to black, I was able to make her look more like a dog.  She is 3" tall.

Amigurumi Cat

I crocheted the Cat next.  I used Sharon's basic pattern for the Little Bigfoot Collection as a base.  She is 2.5" tall.

Amigurumi Crocodile

I made the Crocodile last.  My youngest sister suggested that I make a crocodile because she thought it would be cool.  So I spent the most time working on him to get the look I wanted.  I think I might spend some more time later tweaking him a bit to get a cleaner look.  He is 2.25" tall.

Check out Amigurumi Crocodile to see the pattern on how I made him.

I still have to make the Little Bigfoot Piggy.  Plus, I have many ideas for making all sorts of animals in this style!  Which will be coming soon.  If you like these, then check out Amigurumi Dogs.

A Big Thank You to Sharon Ojala for inspiring me to create these beauties and sharing her patterns freely with all of us!

If you took the time to read all of this, then I want to thank you for showing interest in my work.
