Whenever I am working on one crochet project, my mind is always wondering and thinking up the next thing I should crochet. So, about a year ago, when I was working on Crochet Baby Dress & Hat Set for a friend, I got to thinking how much fun it would be to crochet abc baby blocks! Once I had finished the set for my friend, I started to design them on my paint program. Not only did I design the letters and numbers, but I, also, designed some squares with little pictures. Though, I didn't actually get around to crocheting them until May of this year. Not sure if I am going to do the picture ones at this time, but I definitely want to have all the letters and digits in the set.
I am using tapestry crochet for this project. It is one of my favourite techniques despite the fact that you have to single crochet throughout the entire project. Single crochet is not exactly my favourite stitch in the whole world, but all of my favourite crochet techniques and things I crochet for use it a lot. I have nothing against single crochet per say. It is just that it takes much longer than any other stitch to complete. With crochet cotton thread #10, and a 1.9mm hook, these squares are about 5 cm (2") long/wide. I have 18 or half of the squares (A-N, P-Q, S and Y) finished. I am still missing 18 squares (O, R, T-X, Z and 0-9) before I can turn them into blocks. The above photo is as far as I could go before I ran out of blue and orange. I was unable to locate the colours for a while. I now have all the colours I need to finish them, but at this time, I have several other projects that trump this one. So it is on hold for a little bit. These have been so much fun to work up and hopefully around Christmastime, I will be able to finish them. I will also be creating a pattern for them once they are finished.
